Google actually got me there without a detour through I've lived in Texas half my life and never managed to do two BIG touristy things. Well, now I've scratched them off my Texas bucket list. I was roaming through Texas, on my way back to Galveston and found Amarillo to be a good stopping point. I dropped the RV- Gypsy Dreamer off at a campground and headed out to find the Cadillac Ranch.
Google actually got me there without the usual insanity, dirt roads, closed intersections, jaunts through Mexico. It's right along Route 66, don't forget to get some cheap spray paint at Walmart. You can leave your mark, which won't last long. The surreal planting of Cadillac's that would have been destined for the junkyard is teeming with folks just itching to get their inner graffiti artist on.
A group of 3 art lovers known as the Ant Farm created the icon in 1974 and it has recently been relocated a little further from the encroaching city.
There was an artist selling whatknots and whosits made from layers of paint that has flaked off over the years. Yep, bought a keychain. Backpats for supporting other crazy artists. I did not bring paint, too conceited to let people cover my work or was it just that I forgot to get some and the art guy was asking an arm and a leg for his cans. So don't forget yours,
I topped it off with my first ever steak stop at the Big Texan Steak Ranch, They also have an RV Park near the Cadillac Ranch with their own Caddy's- if I had only know I would have stayed there. The steak was superb and the Pecan Porter was insanely delish!!!
Happy Trails.
