FAMOUS ARTISTS from the 1920's
Grant Wood 1891-1942- American- "Regionalism"
Grant Wood has always been one of my favorite artists. When I was a kid, "American Gothic" was o the Corn Flakes cereal box. In those days there were maybe a dozen brands of cereal to choose from. We also had a game called "Masterpiece" It featured all kinds of famous art but my family favorite was of course "American Gothic" Whenever someone got that card we yelled "CORN FLAKES!" Therefore it was the highest prized possession in our games. We would barter and bid everything to own that one.
Today The painting is his most famous and is often featured in PARODY- art- used in a recognizable way- as a joke usually, but copied, and often in MEME'S. Lately I have seen lots of Meme's using it for the Corona Virus Meme's. An art teacher in my Facebook group painted the finger-American Gothic version you see above.
Grant had a hard time finding the fame that eventually occurred in his life. He was in the military and when injured ended up as a camouflage painter on tanks and equipment He became an art teacher and was very successful at it, eventually opening a whole art community where he taught people form all over America who loved his style of art called "REGIONALISM" which depicted scenes from ordinary lives.
His famous painting "American Gothic" was named Gothic- because of the window style on the house in the background. The lady was his sister and the man was his dentist who posed for the painting.

The actual house from the "American Gothic" painting by Grant Wood.
The students drew and painted the house and then painted two cheap paintbrushes to be the people.

Right now we are experiencing a difficult time in our history. We have been her before though. Something similar happened in 1918. The two artists on this page were working during that time. Grant Wood painted serene pictures of rural life while Dorthea Lange used photography to show hardship and injustice. Think about what you art could say about what is happening now. This is your chance to document history.
Photographer- Dorthea Lange
Compare our times and photography to Dorthea's.
Her photography was during The Great Depression when the Dust Bowl occurred in Texas, people were starving to death, Japanese-Americans were being forced into internment camps, unemployment was everywhere.
She brought attention to the plight of the people affected by this National Tragedy.
Her photos were featured in newspapers and magazine- the only media platform in her day! Reactions to her photos often brought immediate help for people on the brink of death from starvation. Many of the people in her photos were very skinny- not because it was fashionable, but because they had no food.

What can YOU do to help people through photos?
